"the voice of applied microbiology"
About Us

FEMSSfAM is the voice of Applied Microbiology within the UK. We are the oldest UK microbiology society with members worldwide. In 2006 we celebrated our 75th anniversary and a number of special events were held during the year. The final celebration was the President's Dinner which was held in the Palace of Westminster on 23rd November 2006. At this event we also launched a book on the history of the Society.

SfAM works in partnership with sister organisations and microbiological bodies to ensure that microbiology and microbiologists are able to exert influence on policy-makers within the UK, in Europe and world-wide. The quality of the microbiologists of the future depends on the standard of education offered, and the Society plays a leading role in working with many different organisations to educate, inform and support the training of our future microbiologists. We aim to facilitate closer contacts between microbiologists around the world through this website, meetings and publications. We provide our members with information and services which will help them in their everyday work as well as promote the importance and cause of Applied Microbiology in the wider community.

We are an unincorporated body and a registered charity which is governed by the Committee who are the trustees of the Society in charity law. Our members play a leading role in shaping the future of Applied Microbiology and we are represented on many important scientific committees and organisations.

Many grants, awards and prizes are available to assist members in their careers as microbiologists. These include The President's Fund, Conference Studentships, Sponsored Lectures, the Students into Work Scheme and the new SfAM Fellowship grant.

We hold two annual meetings. The January Meeting comprises concurrent sessions on topical microbiological subjects. The Summer Conference is held every July and comprises a main symposium, a poster session, the AGM and a lively social programme. In addition, joint ventures with other organisations are held on topics of mutual interest.

The Society publishes two monthly journals: Journal of Applied Microbiology and Letters in Applied Microbiology. In addition, we produce a quarterly in-house magazine - Microbiologist and are a partner with Blackwell Publishing in the monthly journal Environmental Microbiology.
