This is the era of Applied Microbiology with stories every day in the media about avian flu, MRSA, C difficile and MMR to name just a few. A measure of the respect that SfAM's Communication Unit has gained is that Journalists are constantly phoning for background briefing and explanation as well as the names of microbiologists they can contact.

  • always do our best to provide facts, information and explanation
  • if speculation is required, explain the rationale behind that speculation
  • desist from hyping a story - whether it is the journalist or the scientist doing the hyping

    An elite group of scientists, policy makers and journalists last night attended the inaugural Environmental Microbiology lecture presented by Professor Rita Colwell.

    Another successful SfAM summer conference took place at the Wellington Park hotel, Belfast. The meeting kicked off with the Lewis B Perry memorial lecture presented by Dr Bernard Dixon OBE who discussed microbiology in the political arena.

    Winner of SfAM Communications Award announced 30th May 2008

    This year SfAM launched it's Communications Award of £1000 which recognises the effective communication of applied microbiology to the general public.
