This is the era of Applied Microbiology with stories every day in the media about avian flu, MRSA, C difficile and MMR to name just a few. A measure of the respect that SfAM's Communication Unit has gained is that Journalists are constantly phoning for background briefing and explanation as well as the names of microbiologists they can contact.

    Parents in USA target of CDC campaign against MRSA 9th September 2008

    A campaign launched by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the USA will inform parents of specific measures they can take to reduce skin infection with MRSA.

    Deaths from C. Difficile continue to rise 28th August 2008

    The Office for National Statistics has reported data indicating that the number of death certificates citing infection with C. Difficile, has risen from 6,480 in 2006 to 8,324 in 2007, a rise of 28%.

    Scientists in the USA have found that people who lived through the 1918 outbreak can still produce antibodies against H1N1 influenza.

    Fungus killed by 'heat' of chillis 11th August 2008

    Scientists in Washington, USA have discovered how hot chilli peppers use their 'heat'. The spiciness comes from chemicals known as capsaicinoids which form a defence against the growth of Fusarium fungus, which otherwise would destroy the plants seeds before they can be distributed by birds.

    Maggots could help in battle against MRSA 5th August 2008

    Scientists have found that the secretions of the greenbottle maggot contain an antibiotic capable of killing 12 different strains of MRSA. The drug, named Seraticin, can also combat the C difficile stomach bug, lab tests show.
