JAM lecturer announced for 2018 Annual Conference

The Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM) is delighted to announce that this year’s Journal of Applied Microbiology (JAM) lecture will be presented by Albert Bosch from the Department of Microbiology of the University of Barcelona.

The lecture is titled, ‘Hepatitis A virus- new insights from an old acquaintance’.

Hepatitis A occurs sporadically and in epidemics worldwide, with a tendency for cyclic recurrences. The hepatitis A virus is one of the most frequent causes of foodborne infection. Epidemics related to contaminated food or water can emerge suddenly and have massive impact, such as the epidemic in Shanghai in 1988 that affected about 300,000 people.

Hepatitis A viruses persist in the environment and can withstand food-production processes routinely used to inactivate or minimise bacterial pathogens.

Water worries

Last year, Bosch found himself at the centre of a media storm when more than 4,000 people fell ill with norovirus in north-eastern Spain after drinking bottled spring water contaminated with human faecal matter.

"It is the first time in the world that norovirus has been found in bottled water," admitted Bosch, who was in charge of the analysis of the contaminated water.

"The way this usually happens with tap water is because somehow faecal water got mixed up with drinking water. But in this case we are talking of bottled water, there is a process and we don't know at what point it happened," he added.

Bosch has over 35 years of experience in Virology and has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles on enteric viruses in scientific journals.

He acted as Chairman of the Astrovirus Study Group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). He is President of the International Society for Food and Environmental Virology and of the Spanish Society for Virology; he was the President of the Water Microbiology section of the Spanish Society for Microbiology and is member of the steering committee of the Health-Related Water Microbiology group of the International Water Association.

The Journal of Applied Microbiology (JAM) lecture will be presented by Albert Bosch at 19:00 on Monday 9 July at the Society for Applied Microbiology Annual Conference at The Grand Hotel, Brighton, UK.
