The Society offers Full Ordinary Members the opportunity to give undergraduate students and recent graduates, studying microbiology as part of their degree programme, the opportunity to obtain work experience. Grants can be made available to any Full Ordinary Member who is able to offer a suitable work placement for a period of up to 10 weeks. One year’s free membership will be offered to every student upon approval of the application.
Please note: In 2012 the Society will be introducing a deadline for applications for the Students into Work grant. All applications should be received by 7 April.

Terms and Conditions
1. Any Full Ordinary Member of the Society who can offer an undergraduate student, or a recent graduate (within three months of graduation), a work placement is eligible to apply for a grant. The placement can last for up to a maximum of 10 weeks.
2. The grant will normally provide support for the student at the rate of £200 per week and up to £500 for specified research costs, e.g. consumables used by the student. The monies will be paid direct to the department in which the student/graduate works.
3. The applicant must have been a member of the Society for at least one full subscription year before the start date of the student placement and must be a fully paid-up member at the time of application.
4. Applications should be made by the supervisor at least six weeks before the proposed start date and before 7 April. Applications after this date may be considered.
5. Applicants must provide the student’s Curriculum Vitae and details of the intended project stating how the project will benefit the student.
6. The student must write a short article of between 500-1000 words within four weeks of the placement, describing the research project undertaken during the placement, that will be published in the Microbiologist at the discretion of the Editor.
7. The applicant must inform the Society of the career chosen by the Student.
8. Preference will be given to Full Ordinary Members applying for the first time.
9. The student will be offered one year’s free membership to be taken during the year the grant is awarded.
